FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • What is the “Oldies Preservation Society”?

The “Oldies Preservation Society” [OPS] is an IRS recognized 501C3 nonprofit organization formed in 2018. The purpose of OPS is to preserve the music and history of the beginning and early years of rock n roll and educate the public about the songs and artists of that era. In other words … keep these great Oldies alive and on the radio for the years to come! When you give to OPS, you are helping to make sure this music does not just go away from the radio, as it has in most cities across America.

  • How much money are you trying raise? What is the goal?

The cost to operate a radio station like this is only $36 an hour. Since we’re on the air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the total number of hours is 728 hours a month. Our Goal is to have each of those 728 hours sponsored or underwritten by our listeners at $36 per month.

In addition to the monthly operational goal, we also have Special Gift goals for various projects. We will ask donors to join the OPS Financial Support Team both by pledging to give monthly and also by making special one-time gifts to improvement projects.

  • So what does my monthly support pay for?

Keeping the oldies music on the radio – Programming costs, business expenses, maintenance, internet costs, FCC license fees, telephones, insurance, equipment, rent, staff salaries and so on.

Music licensing - While playing music on the radio sounds simple but its actually quite costly due to publishing rights, royalties, streaming fees, and so on.

Online Streaming Costs - KOOL not only reaches people driving in their cars, but also those who are streaming KOOL live from home or work. Each month on the KOOL website, many new listeners tune in to KOOL Oldies music from their mobile device or laptop.

Entertaining and educational elements between the songs by experienced and professional DJ’s that work to keep you informed and entertained.

  • What is a Pledge Drive

A Pledge Drive is the on-air fundraising period of time where listeners will be asked to make their pledge of monthly financial support for Oldies music by joining the “Financial Support Team” of the “Oldies Preservation Society”. Pledge Drives happen 4 times a year on KOOL 107.1FM: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, and usually run 4-5 days each.

  • Why is KOOL Doing a Pledge Drive for OPS?

Advertising income alone cannot sustain an oldies music station like KOOL. This music from the 1 st 3

decades of rock is quickly disappearing from the radio. Many other Oldies stations across the country have either closed down or abandoned this music entirely. We don’t want that to happen here! The decision has been made to be a Listener-Supported station, much like Public Radio, to keep this Oldies music on the air.

  • How can I make my Pledge of Support?

    • Call 509-238-1071 during times when volunteer phone operators are available.
    • Call in to the KOOL Comment Line 833-203-KOOL anytime 24/7 and leave your name and phone number. You will be called back to confirm your pledge.
    • Call the “Join OPS” line at 833-JOIN-OPS and leave your name and phone number.
    • Use the Pledge Form on the OPS website…click on DONATE or PLEDGE NOW and fill out the form.
  • What is a recurring EZ Gift?

This is an automatic, monthly payment from your credit or debit card or from your checking or savings account.  It saves the nonprofit money in processing costs, which means we can put your gift to even better use!

  • What is a Challenge?

This is when KOOL listeners are "challenged" by another generous donor’s gift. For example, “If 10

people join the team by pledging a $36 monthly gift during the next song, a $1,000 special gift will be added to the Special Gift total. These “challenge” gifts are used to inspire other listeners to give.  If you are interested in making a challenge gift, please call 509-238-1071.

  • How is KOOL different from other radio stations?

Most station playlists have 300-400 songs that you hear over and over and over. The KOOL playlist has

well over 5,000 songs and more songs are added all the time. Listeners tell us they want variety and

    KOOL delivers it.

Listeners also say they do NOT like long commercial breaks. Yet, radio stations across America play an average of 19 Commercials an hour with breaks that can go on for up to 8 or 9 minutes! Not at KOOL. We play very few commercials which mean we can play more songs every hour than other radio stations. Also, commercial breaks are never longer than 2 minutes, so we get back to the music quickly!

KOOL is not supported by a small group of large donors that would dictate programming, or a giant

corporation, or the government. KOOL is one of the very few truly locally owned and operated radio stations, supported by many people giving small amounts per month.

KOOL is clean entertainment for you and your family. With other media pushing the boundaries of good taste, KOOL is committed to “not going there”. KOOL presents a “good clean fun” alternative to all that other stuff.

KOOL is also companionship… for the widower left alone, for a single mom struggling to make ends

meet, and for the person driving along who just needs to hear a friendly voice and some KOOL music on the radio. KOOL can be a refuge from the stresses of life. Radio is an intimate medium and KOOL works hard to be there with KOOL music and a positive word and outlook and every day.
